Sponsor Information ( June 2022 )

Thank you very much for wanting to sponsor a child in Cambodia. We know that this step is carefully considered and sometimes a little unsettling. However, transparency and clarity are very important to us. Therefore, some information about what exactly happens with the money.

Your future godchild will attend the Kok Krosaing English School in Siem Reap or the Cambodia Development School in Battambang.

School attendance is very strictly controlled by us and parents or carers are very closely involved. It is important to us that the child goes to school regularly. This is not a problem either, as the children are always very happy to come to school.

With the monthly sponsorship contribution, we finance school attendance and almost everything that the child needs for this. This includes school uniforms, books, school supplies, teachers' wages and pocket money of $2. Students in Siem Reap receive a nutritious breakfast each morning. Often the only meal of the day. Sometimes there are also costs for medical care, which we then finance from reserves.

From time to time we have financing gains from the euro-dollar exchange rate, since we calculate the sponsorship contributions in euros and settle them in dollars in Cambodia. From this additional income, we buy bicycles for the poorer students at regular intervals, since the way to school is sometimes very long and there are no school buses. The children are always particularly happy here.

To organize all this, we have cooperation partners and employees on site. In Siem Reap, the cooperation partners are Sun Sothy and her husband Roger Valkenbourgh, who run the Kok Krosaing English School with passion and great personal and financial commitment. In Battambang we trust our debt manager Chy Piseth and his staff. We attach great importance to the fact that our employees are not guided by pure compassion, but that children in need are selected as a priority.

How does it go from here ?

You start with the selection of a child on our homepage or leave the selection to us. The basic fee is 15 euros/month and can be adjusted individually. There is also the option of sharing a sponsorship. This must be requested separately. After you have made your decision, please fill out our online application on our homepage and send it to us electronically by clicking on the button. However, this does not yet result in a contract. To accept your application, you will receive our confirmation of acceptance, a data protection declaration, our statutes and documents about your godchild by email or by post.

Now you are the proud sponsor of the Kamboscha-Kinderhilfe-Verein e. V. and give a child the chance of a self-determined life.

Information about your godchild

You will receive our current newsletter 2-3 times a year. Our activities and commitment are described here in general. In addition, you will receive information about your sponsored child at irregular intervals. We encourage the children to write letters to their godparents as well. If your child writes to you, you will receive the letter scanned by email. Postage would take too long and be too expensive. The letters often don't arrive. Please make sure that we always have the latest information. Please notify us of a change in your address or email address at: info@kinderhilfe-kambodscha.de. It is always very time-consuming and expensive for us to conduct research.

For more information, visit our Facebook or Twitter account. We have set up an information page and a closed group there. From there you will usually receive up-to-date information. An exchange of godparents is also possible.

Another important note:

We are a small association. That means we are all volunteers and it is absolutely impossible to answer all personal questions about the child, his family, family relationships, shoe size, preferences, favorite food, favorite toy, etc. If we were to do this, we would have to operate an expensive administrative apparatus that would be at the expense of the children in need. Some family information is also none of our business, we support the child in its education, we don't adopt it.

letters

A question is often asked: Is it possible to write or contact my godchild? Of course ! This is also much easier with us than with large organizations. You can send letters directly or scan and send them. We will be happy to give you the addresses of the schools. A personal visit is also possible at any time.

However, the following should be observed when sending letters: Please send all letters in English, unless you speak Khmer yourself. We recommend sending by DHL by registered mail, as mail rarely reaches its recipient by normal means. However, the costs for this are extremely high (up to 70 euros per letter). Therefore, one should consider whether contact via email would not make more sense. The money saved could be passed on to the child directly and without deductions via our organization.

Do not always expect an immediate answer, many children are just beginning to write and do not yet speak English well enough to communicate with you. The teachers encourage the children to write letters as part of the lesson. Many are shy and afraid of making mistakes and losing face as a result. It's just another world that we sometimes find it difficult to understand.

Please remember that every post will be opened and please refrain from giving gifts ( see info on gifts ). The children aren't used to it and we don't actually want to introduce the culture of constantly being given presents. The children are unbelievably creative and make their own presents. This is great fun and great joy for them. If you want to encourage this, then an additional earmarked donation is a better investment. With 50 to 100 euros, a whole school class can spend a week doing handicrafts.

General Rules for Gifts

First of all, we would like to state that no one is obliged to give gifts in addition to the monthly sponsorship contribution. We are by no means happy when the children are overwhelmed with things that are completely normal here, but luxury for the children in Cambodia (remember: A worker usually earns around 250 dollars a month). It is not expedient to turn school children into class outsiders with luxurious gifts. It is better to save something here so that you can later help the child at secondary school or even university. There are as many alternatives as you can help a whole family with little money. We would be happy to advise you on this.

If you want to visit your godchild

We ask that you register all visits in advance. It always makes more sense and is better for planning. Please talk to us in advance if you are planning to travel to Cambodia to visit your godchild. Otherwise you arrive and it's the holidays or the children are having exams.

The same applies on site as for gifts. Don't overwhelm your child with luxury.

In addition, we have established the following rules to protect children:

- no activities with the child alone. There will always be a supervisor from us.

- No invitation to your or any other hotel

- no extensive shopping tours

- no invitations to amusement parks or attractions that are only made up for tourists.

Here are a few useful suggestions:

- Visit of the whole family in your house or cottage

- Purchase of useful things (school supplies, etc.) in town with the child/parents

- Lunch in place with the child and his family

- Excursion to historical sites, which the child will later get to know as part of school trips.

- foods for the whole family really make sense

(e.g. 1 bag of rice 25 kg costs about 25 dollars and is enough for a family of four for one month)

termination of the sponsorship

Of course you can end your sponsorship at any time and without giving reasons. In this case, we ask for a timely notification by email to: info@kinderhilfe-kambodscha.de, so that we can look for a new sponsor for the child. We will then set a SEPA mandate for the termination to take effect. Please remember to cancel a standing order yourself. We can also terminate the sponsorship. However, we usually always try to explain why we have to end the sponsorship. On the one hand, it may be that your sponsored child has left the project - has moved, attends a different school, etc. On the other hand, we reserve the right to end the sponsorship if sponsors do not comply with the rules or, in our opinion, due to misconduct the sponsor threatens the sponsored child or the entire project.

A big thank you

Of course, you do not enter into any obligation by accepting a sponsorship. however, take responsibility for a little person. It would be nice if you accompany your godchild on a long-term basis and it doesn't remain as a whim of the moment.

By taking on the sponsorship, you accept the rules regarding letters, gifts and visits from your sponsored child. They are all for the benefit and protection of the children entrusted to our care.

We are happy to answer any further questions. Please contact us by email: info@kinderhilfe-kambodscha.de
